A Good ‘ole Fashioned New England Fall Festival

In the midst of all the chaos from the storm, it is hard to believe that just one week before the local community of West Springfield was enjoying a good ‘ole fashioned New England style Fall Festival. The folks at the Monastery Senior Living Community surely went above and beyond putting this event together and didn’t miss a beat paying attention to detail; from the horse drawn carriage rides out front on the beautifully landscaped property to the farmers market to the children’s corner with fresh baked cookie decorating to face painting that was worthy of a canvas!

The residents of West Springfield along with the residents of the Monastery enjoyed the many amenities available to them on a chilly autumn afternoon. They walked around while sipping apple cider, buying fresh and local produce from local farms; and if you thought it was too chilly you stepped inside to enjoy the fall bazaar with even more local vendors showcasing their wares. There was local honey, local artisans, and handmade gifts, truly everything from soap to nuts!

We are so excited to announce that we just purchased this building at 1 Anngina Drive in Enfield! (scroll down for photos) The space is directly facing Moody Road, right across from Enrico Fermi High School. We will be expanding into 8000 sq. ft. and finally able to stretch out a bit!

We will making some modifications over the next few months to suit our needs, and we plan to occupy the space by the New Year!

Minuteman Press New England recently worked with global advertising firm Weber Shandwick to create a branded QR code for Degree Men’s deodorant. The QR code was featured on the Nascar #42 Target Chevrolet driven by Juan Pablo Montoya. (Look just to the left of the rear wheel.) We enjoyed working on this project, and we’re excited to showcase the final result!

Been a while...

Lots going on... isn't that what we all say? Too busy. Not enough downtime. And, without fail, something always suffers...

We all truly need to find that balance. Enough rest, enough work, and plenty of play! Because, after all... all work and no play makes each and every one of us... no fun to be around! (If you don't believe me... just ask your family!)

With that said... I am hoping everyone had a wonderful, safe and happy July 4th Holiday! Time to recoup, rest up, enjoy family and friends and recharge those batteries that have been running on close to nothing for far too long!

The summer is a tough time for business. Lots of folks we deal with are on vacation. We lose motivation with the warmer weather and the need to BE on vacation! I get it. I get it... but don't forget... we always have to be marketing ourselves... even when we are ON vacation! We always have to be the face of our businesses... to everyone we meet. Now, that is not to say that we need to shove ourselves down the throat of everyone at your local Supermarket Deli counter... however, remain aware of conversation and potentially where conversations may take us... And yes, it is as if we are "on" a lot of the time... but if we are truly doing what we love... than there is not much effort!

Brings me to another very important point... are you doing what you love? BIG question... HUGE!

Some soul searching is involved with this one... how many of us truly love what we do? Who dreads going to bed Sunday night knowing when you wake up Monday morning... oye...

Ahhh... the dreaded Monday morning blues... Maybe, just maybe it's time to talk to someone folks! And yes, I know... the economy still sucks and we can't just job hop from one to the next to the next! I KNOW! But hey... we need to work for a very long time, and it would behoove us to actually not mind going to that said job! hmmm??? Am I right??? You know I am right!

Career Counselors, Life Coaches... there are variations that will take you down similar roads... a road that leads you to be true to yourself. A road that you can be happy, you can still support yourself (and a family) and you have enough energy left over for fun. It is a must. We will all self-combust if we continue down this road (and you know what road I am referring to!) And those of you on it... You know who you are... Need to make the choice to help yourself before you sabotage everything you have worked so hard for...

Something to think about as you sip that umbrella'd cocktail at the beach that you are so longing for... A little soul searching, a whole lot of truth and voila! Presto, Bammo... a future you may just enjoy...

What an incredible PVP start to 2011!!!

April Cantell of Buttercups Bistro wowed us with her incredible menu that not only fed your body, but also your soul.

Mary-Anne DiBlasio, owner of the Western Mass Wellness Center strongly feels that you are indeed who you surround yourself with; and equally you are only as successful as those you partner with, so, with that said, she explains to us, that she carefully chooses the "Wellness Partners" that she has as part of her wellness center.

"April has chosen to not only refer to herself as a 'traveling chef', Ms. DiBlasio tells the PVP, "but she also works the foods' energies to better balance the group she is feeding. The fact that she is working off the foods' energy is why she was a perfect choice as a Wellness Partner for WMW. She specifically chose certain foods to cover all the chakras of the body." {Chakras being the energy equivalent to each endocrine gland in the body.}

WMW also had both Yesenia Camareno (shown here) and Mila McEvoy from Energia Massage there offering chair massages to the group. They explained the simple benefits of massage on the body and personal experiences they have had with massage truly helping them balance their own lives. They offer Swedish Massage, Deep Tissue, Couples Massage, Pregnancy Massage and Hot Stone Therapy, just to name a few. Yesenia and Mila graduated together and decided to go into business together. "They are a great pair and should do quite nicely." Mary-Anne feels very fortunate to have them as Wellness Partners at the Center. She has always wanted to offer massage, and never had the right fit, now, she tells us, she has found that fit.

The meeting was a great gathering on new and old and the synergy of the group was truly felt by all. Their was a student of Mary-Anne's that had told her once that she truly offers a "Western Mass Wellness Experience" well, the PVP meeting was just that. You left, relaxed from the massage, well fed, yet not feeling full or bloated {by the natural foods selected by both April and Mary-Anne} and having a better understanding of what Western Mass Wellness Center stands for - Wellness from the inside out.

"I have worked long and hard to remain credible as a Holistic Health Practitioner and it is very important not to just run out and gravitate to the newest, latest and greatest!" As a matter of fact, when asked about her "new age" center, she corrects me my telling me that the modalities she works with are far from "new age". "These are ancient healing modalities used centuries ago, there is nothing 'new' about them." She works with vibration she tells the PVP. Everything is based on vibration, and she explains that we also are based on vibration {we are just masses of vibrational energy} and her wellness modalities and wellness products that she sells out of her boutique, Simple Pleasures of Mind Body & Spirit, work on balancing those said vibrations within the body, giving you a feeling of better balance, health and well being.

She will be showcasing her wellness products as well as wellness services. Friday Meet & Greet

This Friday's PVP meeting will be a meet and greet with the members of the Longmeadow based networking group the EBBE.

The goal for this meeting is to broaden our horizons and maximize on the summer vacation weeks getting together as many working professionals as possible to network with one another.

The meeting will be held at our resident restaurant... The Hofbrauhaus.

We are looking forward to a great luncheon meeting with lots of camaraderie and sharing of our expertise!

A Feast to feed a King or Queen...

Well... this is what the PVP group was given when Sharon Beaudry hosted the last monthly PVP meeting... So... with that said, if we were fed so well... what would it be like to live at the Monastery??

Well... let me tell you... Landmark at Monastery Heights has been completely restored and is now a beautiful senior living community, offering independent and assisted living as well as a special program for the memory impaired.

Much of the Monastery's original beauty has been preserved; stained glass windows, the chapel, dining room and the large wooden doors & windows. The historic beauty of the stone building combined with 18 acres of magnificent ground have made the Monastery a true landmark of Western Massachusetts.

The Landmark was purchased in 1989 by Cliff Boyle, a down to earth business owner that had a vision. The original monastery was home of many retreats originated by the Passion of Brothers that had been around since the 1920's. But with the numbers of participants dwindling, and the number of brothers coming into the Passion dwindling, they moved the remaining brothers to a West Hartford location. This of course left 110 Monastery Avenue up for options.

When Mr. Boyle purchased the Monastery, he wanted to be sure to maintain the historic details. All of the Landmark properties are renovated historic buildings, which seems to add a nice touch. Mr. Boyle is sure to keep original woodwork, stained glass, even pews are original. He wanted the atmosphere to be that of which the monastery would have been with a little bit of modernization and keeping it very homey to the residents coming in.

The facility offers 3 meals a day (and kudos to the chef, we've had a sampling of these said meals, and... WOW! where do I sign up??!!) as well as many activities: exercise, yoga, bingo, dining out, movies, field trips, and there is a non-denominational chapel right there on the premises.

Management always keeps there staff fresh and up-to-date on all the current in-services, especially with their dementia patients. Not only are the staff well trained, they are very compassionate and kind; and when you are dealing with where mom and dad could potentially be going... bedside manners are a MUST HAVE!

There are 105 apartments that all have unique features. When residents come in, they start with an empty, clean slate, to truly bring in a piece of themselves, to truly have a place where they can call their own. 35 of these apartments are for low income residents that have medicare and/or mass health.

This is not a medical facility, there is no skilled care. There is however, folks that assist with shopping, there is a hair salon on the premises and there are medical practitioners that do come in for screenings, etc...

This is an elder community and is only for folks 62 and up. This is a very money conscious generation. So in order to keep the fees reasonable, they needed to redefine how to create community, like a little city within the gates. Speaking of community, The Landmark maintains strong connection with their community, getting involved with events from the Rotary, Kiwanis as well as their local School Department...

This describes Minuteman Press to a "T" !!

(First a little history)
Michael Weber and his wife Lindsey have owned and operated Minuteman Press since March, 2004. When they purchased the business, they made a commitment to provide high-quality printing and copying services and to meet their customers’ deadlines . This philosophy has become an integral part of their business model, and they have passed on this sense of commitment to everyone on their staff.

Printing is a family business for Michael and Lindsey. Michael’s parents opened Minuteman Press in Norwich in 1992, and then later expanded by opening shops in Middletown , Hartford and New London. They still partner with these locations to maximize their efficiencies and meet their customers’ needs.

Their shop has grown "significantly" since 2004. They attribute their success to their dedication to their customers’ needs and their commitment to their community. Michael is a member of the PVP and has been almost since it's inception. He has offered us good information about what he does at our meetings, and this past meeting, we were able to see first hand what Michael does during the course of his busy days since Michael was able to give us a tour of Minuteman Press/Enfield!

When we first walked in, the printer located right in the lobby/waiting area was buzzing and spitting out sheets at warp speed. Once all the PVP members arrived and squeezed in, Michael explained to us that he has been so busy as of late, he has all of his machines running.

All the machines you ask? Well... from the beginning of his shop to the very back, with not an inch to spare, you will find equipment; working equipment! Michael admitted to us that he is literally "busting at the seams", and you can see it for yourself while standing in his shop. Not that he is complaining or anything! Busy is good! But right now, between a new machine coming in, learning the new machine, training a new employee, having a boatload of deadlines to meet, and hosting the PVP this past meeting; something had to give, and we were hoping for it not to be Michael's sanity!! LOL

Michael introduced us to all his employees as we worked our way from one crowded side of the shop to the other, all like busy little elves doing what they do best. It's like they all have their little niche within the shop. The shop buzzes and hums like a well oiled machine, it's nice to watch. Albeit busy, you can tell it all works. It has a rhythm to it.

Michael explained to us that not only does he print paper, but he also prints promotional items, and not the typical items (although he absolutely can do pens) but the more creative items that he feels will last a little longer and make more of an impression on your customer, after all, we use folks like Michael to help impress our customers with pretty things like flyers and brochures and handouts, maybe coupons, all of which take careful planning and design, and you don't want to trust the printing of these precious items to just anyone. The first impression someone gets of your business may be a lasting impression... make it a good one! If something is printed poorly, it looks shabby, colors not bright and vibrant, maybe the stock of your cards are too thin... it all matters.

Michael also explains that in his business, technology breaks, and when that happens, it can be detrimental, so, he has a company in place, that he pays to maintain his equipment, it's like insurance. They pay according to their volume. This way here, if something goes down, a tech is on the scene immediately if not sooner. After all, the new quote Michael has is "If I wanted it printed tomorrow, I'd call you tomorrow!" With that said... technicians needs to be top rate; this is very important. Equipment needs to be running perfectly at all times. Nothing good can come of broken down equipment. In the printing business, equipment needs to be replaced every few years, so, it is a constant cycle of life they feel there at Minuteman, and they truly have to stay on top of it. Although, there is one old workhorse that he just won't let them take... Good ole reliable! We're all for high tech toys, but... there is something to be said for the old adage... "they just don't make 'em like they used to!"

Along with the old workhorse, just a few weeks ago, they just purchased a new color press. This will help expedite orders. It's like when I was in manufacturing, it all needs to be lean... and in Michael's case... green. He helps out the environment by planting a tree for every invoice every month. In the month of April they had 170 trees planted; now that is an awesome way to give back, don't you think? Printing:Paper:Trees Get it? The program is called Trees for the Future. I love it.

Michael and Lindsey's goal is to have their own building, room to stretch out instead of their cramped quarters in Enfield. Although, if you have to start someplace, you can see that they have what it takes! To be expanding, hiring new employees, bulging at the seams and purchasing new equipment in this economy, they must be doing something right!!

Melissa Kratovil gave an overview of The Hofbrauhaus at the March PVP

The Hofbrauhaus has called West Springfield home off of Memorial Avenue since 1935. Current owner Joe Stevens took over operations in 1995. Since Joe has taken over, he has made a lot of changes. Now, not only does the Hofbrauhaus offer German cuisine, it also boasts a more International menu, appealing to even more pallets. In addition to the daily menu changes, Joe also added a banquet menu, which Melissa proudly heads up the department. She truly refers to herself as a “Jack of all Trades” or… should we say “Jane”. She is in charge of all the marketing; from TV to radio and booking of the private parties. She is always challenged on how to be creative with the marketing to be sure they stand out.

The Hofbrauhaus is celebrating their 75th anniversary this year, and in tribute to this milestone event, Joe is offering the $19.35 menu to their patrons as a thank you! A definite DO NOT MISS!

One thing the Hofbrauhaus is well known for is its Sunday brunches… we’ve all been there at least once, am I right? Now, don’t get too upset when I say this, but Joe has decided to do away with the Sunday brunches, WAIT! I said not to get upset… he may have taken something away, but he is giving us something in place of it… On Sundays, from 12:noon until 8:PM, The Hofbrauhaus will be offering “Family Dinners”. It will be a great way to get the family together. There will be four or five entrees, and it will all be served “family style”. SEE! Not so bad, right?

The Hofbrauhaus is known for its “fine dining”. Joe goes above and beyond regarding the quality of food he purchases for the restaurant. He is extremely picky and they receive meat and seafood in on a daily basis. Joe makes sure to keep things local by getting as much locally grown produce as possible. He is also picky when it comes to his staff. The chefs on board truly take pride in their work.

The Hofbrauhaus has many private rooms to choose from if you are looking to hold a private function at the facility, and, get this; there is no charge for the room!! “GO JOE!” From buffet to cocktail style, they will be sure to fit any budget.

Future plans… Joe will be extending the main bar and adding an outdoor area. WooHoo! It will still have the fine dining feel. It will be covered as well as heated. They are looking to begin construction on this project in the next couple of months. The outdoor patio will be open for lunch, dinner as well as private parties such as showers.

This is Erik Skar’s motto. Erik Skar is a young professional (literally, being on the Board of the Young Professionals Society here in Springfield, MA). He is indeed living the American dream. He is a happily married father of two working in the industry that he was surrounded by for years as a child. His father, having held the position of CFO of Mass Mutual for 8 years, also started a program called LifeBridge; a life insurance program available to those in less fortunate positions that poses no cost to them yet helps families secure their future. We even had one of our members Suzanne McElroy from Home Instead Senior Care share with us that while in Nebraska at a business convention, they discussed this very program. A number of adventures and many awards later, (most recently awarded nationally from Mass Mutual for adding 100 clients to MM) we find Erik in the spotlight of our Pioneer Valley Professionals luncheon Friday, February 12th at the Hofbrauhaus, as an Life Insurance Professional from Mass Mutual.

Erik Skar managed to make a relatively mundane subject very interesting. His life revolves around life; pun intended. We discussed the differences between term and whole life insurance policies and the benefits of both, well, in his opinion the only benefit from term is he gets paid. He describes term as “instant financial failure”. Statistics have only 2% of the population actually dying before the age of 65. Erik fully recommends whole life if you are looking for insurance and here’s why; it is more of an investment than a temporary band-aid to an inevitable problem, we’re all going to pass onto the spirit world eventually. He finds that this is a smarter way to accumulate cash, especially in this economy with the interest rates being what they are. He finds this vehicle being used by smart and savvy people. The earlier you can start the better; but it’s never too late!

Erik gives a big cheshire cat grin as he describes his position as barely one step above a car salesman. He knows that this is not the type of subject that folks really enjoy talking about. It seems to be that necessary evil we know we need, someplace in the background, yet Erik describes how you can get your insurance policy to work for you; and after so many years, how it not only pays for itself, it can actually give you that cushion you need when the water heater goes or the kids are about to begin college. He is not the typical insurance salesman. Erik will sit down with you to fully discuss your needs. The initial consult is no charge, and Erik will discuss what he would recommend based on hearing both your immediate and future needs for yourself and your family. Each policy is personal to you and you alone.

Involved in everything from the Chicopee Chamber to Junior Achievement, just to name a couple; yet I cannot go without mentioning his appearance on Survivor in Norway. That is Erik… a survivor; living life to its fullest, and helping his clients to do the same. Erik jam packs his days to be sure that he is not missing anything. He will also be sure that you too won’t miss anything regarding the security of your family’s future once you are no longer there to keep things in order.

Erik finds that the younger generation leans more towards term life and the older generations lean more towards whole life. A lot of the time he will come in to talk to folks after a not so reputable agent has “muddied the waters”. So, not only is this a tough subject to broach, Erik now has to deal with backtracking from someone elses mis-information. A challenge: yes, but Erik does it with ease. Erik is extremely knowledgeable in what he does. He can answer any question you may have regarding insurance. If by chance he does not know the answer to something you have asked, he says there are more folks that know even more than he does at MM that he is able to tap for answers. If you can imagine that!

Although he began his professional career in the psychology field, interestingly enough, he found it was truly not for him. He moved to the Insurance Industry 6 years ago, finding his niche. “It’s fun when you finally find what you are born to do.” He feels very fortunate to be where he is in life. Insurance is in his blood. Erik will do you right.

I had the honour of presenting to my own group at the Monte Carlo in West Springfield, MA... So as opposed to me writing an article about myself, and sounding completely bias :O) Here is just a recap! Any further information needed? Please contact me directly.

The human body is one of the most fascinating mechanisms there is. The body knows exactly what it needs to heal itself. We unfortunately do not give ourselves the time and space we need, the appropriate down time, which our bodies require to recoup. Therefore, we see a lot of people having heart attacks, suffering from anxiety, feeling depressed etc…. If we took the time to honor ourselves, our bodies would then, in turn, thrive. It is the mind body spirit connection that truly makes the difference.

We here at WMW, instead of looking for that quick fix in today’s fast paced society, give the body the space it needs to heal. After all, that is what it is designed for. Granted, there are definite times when it needs a little help, and we are all for combining science-based medicine with natural healing modalities for complete wellness. We need to start though, by bringing the body back into balance. There are so many factors today which throw the system off balance: Stress, fatigue, depression, the list goes on and on.

The PVP had the pleasure of listening to Brenda McGiverin telling us the benefits of advertising with Channel 22 WWLP. WWLP-22 News is an NBC affiliate serving Hampden, Hampshire and Franklin Counties, as well as surrounding areas in Western Mass; reaching as far north as Windham County VT and as south as beyond Hartford County CT. Ch. 22 strives to provide local news coverage with an emphasis on community involvement. Their station is committed to having the most up-to-date transmission facilities and state of the art equipment.

WWLP-22 News reaches 215,000 households per week (according to the Nielsen, May 2009 ratings) and WWLP.com is the #1 news and information source for multi-media broadcast websites in western Mass.

WWLP-22 News strives to be the source for local News, Weather, and information in Western Mass through the use of three multi-media platforms: TV, on-line as well as mobile. ARE WE SAFE WITHIN OUR OWN HOMES?

Now, this is a question for Dave Condon, Owner, Northeast Security Solutions in West Springfield. Dave, a member of the PVP for just a few months now, has really made a lasting impression with all of us. That baby face may fool some folks, but when you sit down and talk security with Dave, his knowledge far outweighs any question you may have had as to his expertise.

What you have to respect about Dave, is his honest approach. He will tell it like it is; no candy coating, no sales pitch to seal the deal, just facts. He is very conservative when “selling” his product. You can tell he is truly looking out for your own personal level of comfort for what systems you may be looking at. There are so many different options, that there is something truly for every budget and level of comfort.

One thing Dave was able to provide us with is some basic facts that we may not be aware of:

Poor landscaping may be the cause of your house being at risk… larger shrubs or bushes located near or at any entry points of your home giving undesirables hiding places and subsequent access to your front door, back door and/or windows. Keep landscaping neat and trimmed. Overgrown shrubs is not just a sign of much needed chores, it may potentially put your home and your family at risk. Lower shrubs and bushes do not allow for places to hide. You can also put various picker bushes in place as well, as to not leave them any spots to crouch down behind. Roses, Barberry, check with your local garden house.

Another huge deterrent is bright outdoor lighting. If your house is brighter than the house next door, which house do you think the burglar will most likely approach? Not that we want to send any ill will onto your neighbors and friends, however, you need to be sure you are protecting yourself and your family. Security lights, motion detectors, even cameras depending on the level needed.

Now, another false sense of security is the family dog. Yes, Fido can deter a potential novice from sneaking in an open window, however, if there is someone that truly wants to get into your home, they will find a way and Fifi will simply be in the way. With no security system in place, you may also be putting your family pet at risk. They are not made to protect the home, they are truly part of your family, and just like you would not want anything to happen to little Johnny, you should also not want anything to happen to Spot either. There have been numerous stories on the local news regarding pets being injured or killed during a break in. And besides, are you really looking to entrust your safety and the safety of your family and belongings to the family member who grabs his liquid nutrients from the bathroom toilet. :O)

Another thing you want to be sure of is that your deadbolts are secure. May I say, that after listening to Dave and having the hands on touch and feel of various products, that all deadbolts are not created equal! Some are fairly flimsy, and could easily be a point of entry for someone. Doors, another big factor. Are they set right, is there a gap, is the jam secure? You have to keep in mind that a seasoned burglar will try to look as natural as possible when doing his "job". With that said, crawling thru a window may draw some attention. They may opt for entering right thru the grand foyer, thinking if they look that obvious, no one will question what they are doing. There are so many different things to think of, and Dave was so knowledgeable with his products that he did no less than impress!

Dave was also very up front to let us know that he may not be the least expensive company out there, however, after all was said and done, and taking into consideration the installation and monitoring fees, Northeast Security Solutions is by far, the best bang for your buck! Not to mention, you own the equipment outright with them, it is not leased with the potential of being stuck with the balance of what is due for the signed contract.

From the wonderful lunch at Lattitude – West Springfield to the complimentary wine at the tables, both Mike and Gwen gave us loads of information to go home with. There is advertising and then there is advertising…

Both Business West and Healthcare News pinpoint the news specifically to the target market you are looking for… the folks who actually spend the money in our local community. The average household income of their readers is $104K (HCN) - $151K (BW). (Much higher than some other local venues). Now these are the folks you want to be in front of… continually. MARKET SATURATION!!! The way people find you!

Both Gwen and Mike tell us that being in front of your target market on a regular basis is key. That is why both publications offer discounted rates for multiple listings. You want to be sure your potential customers know who you are, and see you on a regular basis. If they see you once or twice, they may forget (4) months down the road when they are looking for your services. They may at that point slightly remember, go back to an issue of Business West or Healthcare News only to find ads of your competitors… and not you. Don’t let this happen.

For Healthcare News… Every doctors’ office, hospital and wellness center has a copy… If you are looking to break into the healthcare field, Healthcare News is the way… Both Healthcare News and Business West is read by their readers. They have found that these issues are read cover to cover. For Business West… it is a paid subscription, so folks purchasing them want the information. They also have a specific Real Estate section that you can list and/or find office space in the local community.

They both have varying subjects month to month that you can be sure to piggyback onto as far as your similarity to the subject. If you are a therapist, you can be sure to get a larger ad in the Mental Health Month of the HCN. If you are an attorney, be sure to get into one of the BW editions that focuses on law. There are many ways that you can also advertise your business in addition to the ads. Do you have something newsworthy? A new addition to your staff perhaps? A new division to your company? Have you moved? Press releases are a great way to get the word out there in addition to having ads. Not only are you advertising your company, you are also sharing with the community something newsworthy that has happened. Keeping the people up to date with your business… literally… What about upcoming events? Be sure to get them complete information at least one month prior to the event to get proper coverage.

Then, of course, you have the Healthcare News and Business West Resource Guides. You can list your business and be in front of folks that are looking for your service. The Resource Guide is well utilized amongst business professionals that receive both the HCN & BW issues. They keep it and utilize this as their reference guide when in need of a local service… you want to be sure you are part of this… you want to be sure to get in front of the folks that are going to need you, when they need you, and since that is never a guarantee as to when, that is the reason why regular advertising is such a key part of your business plan. Everyone needs you, that’s why everyone needs to advertise otherwise no one will ever find you… Be sure to get your information for the Resource Guide to Gwen and/or Mike no later than August 1st.

One last thing, but certainly not the least… Gwen has begun a fabulous Luncheon Series at Pazzo’s downtown once a month. She has had two keynote speakers so far, and taking it from someone who has attended both… They are the best $10 you can spend. Precise information given in a casual atmosphere with great food and great company. I know Gwen had been troubleshooting this idea for some time, and then she just took the torch and ran with it, well… kudos to you Gwen for an incredible way to get community together, involved and informed!

Michael Weber

Age 29: Owner, Minuteman Press

Michael Weber knows a secret about how to succeed in business.

“It’s such a cheesy statement,” said the 29-year-old, who owns and operates Minuteman Press in Enfield, Conn. with his wife Lindsey. “It’s the more you give, the more you get. Givers gain. If you want to succeed, you have to help out and contribute something.”

The formula has worked — the Webers have increased sales by 450% in the five years since they purchased the business.

Weber takes his volunteer work seriously. He is vice president of the North Central Connecticut Chamber of Commerce, a director of the Young Professionals Society of Greater Springfield, and a member of the Home Builders Assoc. of Western Mass. and the Affiliated Chambers of Commerce of Greater Springfield.

He joined these organizations immediately after moving from Boston to Connecticut and taking over the Minuteman franchise. His motivation was to make friends, make a difference, and form relationships that would result in business accounts.

Although his approach has worked, Weber’s intent is always focused on the greater good. “I want to do my part by helping people out and genuinely contributing,” he said, adding that he has supported beneficial initiatives even when they were not good for his business.

Many of his volunteer activities involve working with people who are much older, so Weber especially enjoys his affiliation with the YPS.

“It’s refreshing to be on board with so many like-minded people. I truly have good intentions and try to contribute,” he said.

His background is in information-management systems, and his wife was an assistant buyer for Filene’s Corp. prior to their venture with Minuteman, but both know the value of networking.

“We don’t wait for people to come in,” said Weber. “You have to get to know people. We set quality standards, volunteer, and participate on committees. You have to get involved, and if you show up to help, you get to know everyone.”

Erik Skar

Age 38: Financial Services Professional, MassMutual Financial Group

Erik Skar has a motto. “There is no try; there’s only do,” he said.

The 38-year-old — who holds degrees in Psychology and Religion and is father to 3-year-old Julia, who speaks four languages, and 6-month-old Sofia — loves life and describes his own as a dream.

“I’ve been blessed beyond my understanding. If it was any better, you’d have to wake me up,” he said.

It’s a reality-based dream, however. Skar is a Pioneer Valley Montessori board member, belongs to the Chicopee Chamber of Commerce and the Wilbraham Rotary, is past president of Quaboag Business Networking International, serves as a Big Brother, and volunteers for Best Buddies of Western Mass. He rediscovered golf last summer and is on five tournament committees.

Skar has traveled the world, lived in Europe, and beat out 6,000 other candidates to appear on Survivor in Norway, which was filmed in Malaysia. “I’ve seen so much and cannot give back enough,” said the Young Professionals Society of Greater Springfield board member, who was on the Junior Olympic Soccer Team in Norway at age 16.

He is overwhelmed by the opportunity to transform lives in Greater Springfield, in efforts ranging from mentoring to volunteering. Everything he is involved in has personal meaning, and even his job isn’t work to him, he says, because selling disability and life-insurance policies changes lives when tragedy happens.

“It’s fun when you finally find what you are born to do,” he said.

For Skar, that means “cramming” as much as into every day as possible.

“There is incredible affluence surrounded by incredible poverty here, and therein lies the opportunity to make a difference,” he said. “Springfield has a screaming need for people who want to make a difference, and it doesn’t take much.”

He finds YPS inspirational and loves being surrounded by members. “They are doing incredible things that are almost beyond the scope of understanding,” Skar said.

That’s what happens when your motto and dream are action-packed.

"Weldon is a comprehensive, integrated facility offering inpatient, outpatient, day rehabilitation and pediatric services. The program provides intensive rehabilitation to assist in reaching a higher level of function."

Weldon Rehab definitely sports the same hospitality as it's mother company... Mercy Medical Center, which includes a 166-bed acute care hospital on the same campus. Their website says it all... mercycares.com and they do!

Monica has been a registered nurse for 18 years, always working in critical and acute care settings. This is her second stint at Mercy, with small stints at other local centers right here in Western Mass.

Monica went on to explain the differences between a skilled nursing facility as opposed to an acute rehab facility, letting us know that the skilled nursing offers less care than the acute setting offering a full assessment, which is what Weldon offers.

The average stay at Weldon is approximately 3 wks. They have shorter stays and offer a more aggressive treatment program to get folks back home, where they truly want to be. Normally from Weldon folks can go directly home as opposed to going into a LTC (Long Term Care) facility. They teach folks how to function on their own again simulating a home setting with even a kitchen so they can see how folks would be able to fend for themselves, at home, on their own.

They have inpatient stays as well as outpatient. Their out patient programs are also located at area HealthTrax facilities such as West Springfield and East Longmeadow, where they can also offer aquatic programs for rehabilitation.

Monica goes on to explain the credentials at Weldon. CARF is a voluntary certification above and beyond the typical and required JHACO (Joint Commission) certification that Weldon took upon themselves to achieve. "CARF reviews and grants accreditation services nationally and internationally on request of a facility or program. Our standards are rigorous, so those services that meet them are among the best available." http://www.carf.org/

Knowing that Weldon is CARF certified gives you a feeling of comfort knowing you are choosing the best available care for your loved ones... Weldon got accredited by CARF for it's "Comprehensive Integrated Inpatient Rehabilitation Program (Adults)" for "coordinated and integrated medical and rehabilitation services provided 24 hours a day."

Weldon is a 30 bed facility servicing ages 12 and above. Weldon first opened in 1974 in the old Mercy Hospital building. Being linked directly to Mercy gives them lots of services available to them that other facilities just don't have. The employees at Weldon are passionate about what they do, and sometimes that is hard to find in this type of setting. I know from personal experience that Mercy is definitely my family's hospital of choice, they have taken great care of my mom, just recently. Kudos to Mercy for doing such a great job, and we were sure to fill out one of those comment cards before she left, to be sure those nurses got the recognition they deserve.

Monica, in closing went on to explain that you have a choice where you want to go. It seems as though insurance will dictate where you can go, which is very sad, however, you can always ask for a specific facility. Be sure to ask! You want to be sure you and/or your loved ones are getting the best care possible, and Weldon makes sure of that!

Lisa Merola at the Residence Inn - West Springfield

Lisa did a fabulous job last week hosting the PVP for its March meeting! The facility is not to be overlooked. Tucked away from Rte 5 behind a couple local restaurants is this beautiful place some call home.

First, let's start by welcoming two new members to the group: Suzanne McElroy, from Home Instead Senior Care, Chicopee and Joe Esile from Picture Awards, West Springfield. Great job on the referrals guys... keep them coming!

Lisa had us meet in her conference room, which was very comfortable and easily accessible to all of us. This room is also available to rent if you or someone you know needs space for a meeting or special event. She also let us know that not only is the Residence set up in such a way that folks are there long term, they also rent night to night as well. So, if you have any family or friends coming into the area for a stay, be sure to give Lisa a call and she'll set you up in style!

She also let us know that there are many folks there currently that have been there a while. They feel at home there. They have full use of the facility. Workout space. Pool. Whirlpool. You can sit by a beautiful fireplace in the lobby that feels like your own great room.

We were able to tour the facility and see one of the rooms, or let me say it was more like a condo... This was a spacious two bedroom suite with a full kitchen, a living room, and everything you need from dishes to utensils to linens with housekeeping available to you everyday... hmmm… where do I sign?? :O)

Lisa let us know that a hot breakfast is included everyday with the cost of your stay as well as a dinner social Monday thru Thursday. When the weather is nice, on Wednesdays they have a cookout! Hot Dogs! Hamburgs! There is a patio in the back that makes your stay feel so welcome and homey, as if you are in your own back yard enjoying the birds. You can also choose to sit inside to eat or even grab a dish for takeout and head back "home" and sit quietly while you watch your favorite show.

I for one had no idea this place was back there. I am impressed; hats off to Lisa and the staff of the Residence Inn for even making someone who simply came in for a meeting feel right at home! Whether you are coming into town for a night, on a job assignment for a month or maybe you have a contract consulting for one of our many local businesses for the next three, the Residence Inn, West Springfield is the place to stay to be... home.

We also want to be sure not to forget to mention that Melissa Kratovil from the Hofbrauhaus did a wonderful job with the lunches!!! DEE-LISH!

PVP February Meeting at the School Street Bistro

Our February PVP meeting was held at the School Street Bistro in Westfield. We started by introducing our three newest members to the group: Melissa Kratovil from the Hofbrauhaus, Amanda Barton from Career Group Staffing Services and Brenda McGiverin from Channel 22, WWLP. We are very pleased to say the meetings seem to be a big hit and the group is growing every time we meet.

Well, the February PVP Spotlight this month shown on Kim Landry of Park Square Realty. Her impressive background on continually being a Multi Million Dollar Producer is admirable. What is also admirable is that Park Square holds the top of the market for listings sold, coming up against some of the much larger companies with 200-300 agents. Park Square still holds onto the top position with a mere 55 agents. Kudos to Park Square!

Kim prides herself on her follow thru with her clients. She is there truly every step of the way. Also, she is sure to price things to sell. “You can list your house for anything you want, but it is all in what buyers want to spend for that house that matters.” She is sure to take all comparable properties and show her clients what is available for the same money; to be sure her clients get what they want… THE SALE!

She also is not afraid to pass on a property if she knows that the sellers are asking too much and it won’t sell. Every listing isn’t worth taking if the price isn’t right. She prices properties to sell. Her average still remains within 30 days to move a property, so, when I refer folks to Kim, it is with a firm remark of “If you want it sold, and sold quick, call Kim Landry of Park Square! She’ll get it done!” She just as soon pass the listing on to another company. This of course keeps there number one reputation intact. Realtors will take a listing, just to take a listing, not following steps A-Z first. Kim says Park Square is very thorough in training their staff, of which Kim is an integral part as a company trainer for new agents. Not everyone can sell houses. It is a tough job, and it takes allot of work and diligence. I’ve known Kim for many years and have seen her in action, and for as much as I think I am capable of, I know I couldn’t do it. Hats off to Kim and the Park Square Team as they drudge thru this tough economy, making it look easy.

Her presentation was very informative for all of us, since we have this preconceived notion that the housing market is really plummeting. Well, as Kim let us know, Park Square’s numbers do not look allot different from where they were back in 2005 when the market peaked. Average sale price of a single family home was $230K back in 2005 and in 2008 was a close $220K. The media paints a pretty bleak picture of our economy; Kim lets us know that houses are selling. “Don’t let the media scare you. They can call me and I can do a Market Analysis of their home to let them know exactly what it is worth.” “People should not be afraid to list their houses right now. Houses are moving, people are buying.”

One thing she did stress is that if you had any money to invest, now is the time to purchase real estate since the market is at an all time low, and with the information she receives, it does not seem to be going any lower. A second home, a vacation home, Kim feels that the market will hold for a good year or so. Renters of course are in the best position for capitalizing on not only the low interest rates but also the folks truly looking to get out from under mortgages they cannot afford.

Pioneer Valley Professionals’ January meeting.

Justin Dion was our Pioneer Valley Professionals' Spotlight for January. Not only did Justin host our meeting at Bacon & Wilson, he also supplied a wonderful lunch for everyone. A big PVP Thank You goes out to Justin.

First order of business was to welcome three new members to the Pioneer Valley Professionals Networking Group: Michael Hurczyn from Business West, David Condon from Northeast Security Solutions and Cherie McBride from Purr-fect Communications.

Second was our personal introductions followed by our PVP Spotlight.

Bankruptcy and today’s tough economy…

Justin Dion from Bacon & Wilson, did a wonderful presentation for our Pioneer Valley Professionals meeting this past Friday. I met Justin when he was a new member of Bacon & Wilson, and I have been impressed with his work ever since. There is a certain comfort level with Justin that you may not get simply hiring an attorney out of the phonebook. One of the main reasons I refer folks to Justin is his ability to relate to people on a personal level, not just as an attorney. As we all well know, attorney’s aren't exactly known for their bedside manner ;o) The difference with Justin is that he is real. He is genuine; and you can tell.

His degree in psychology is what truly helps him “counsel” his clients. Attorneys are referred to as "counsels", right? - However it is not required that attorney’s get “counseling” training. Well, Justin has that covered. Justin rec’d his master’s in psychology prior to receiving his juris doctorate in law.

The main focus of the presentation was bankruptcy. Justin gave us all a very different perspective on bankruptcy, and a new way to look at who files and why. He explained in depth, and if I can quote his bio… “Sometimes bad things happen to good people, and they get in over their heads unintentionally.” In today’s tough economy, there are allot of folks who may need help and with the stigma of bankruptcy, they refuse to even talk to an attorney due to their pride, which is a very tough spot to be in. The negative connotations that go along with filing bankruptcy make it hard for folks to get back on their feet. These folks are hardworking individuals. They are cashing out their retirements and their 401k’s, not realizing there are options… Justin isn’t advocating bankruptcy, on the contrary, when folks actually do seek him out, he makes every attempt to alleviate their troubles more logistically... he enjoys the investigative aspect of his job and pulling out all the stops, and filing is truly the last resort.

Justin however, explained that filing for bankruptcy is not as stereotypical as it used to be. It crosses all boundaries of age, income, race… Justin counsels young adults just starting out to folks near retirement and assists them in making very tough decisions for themselves to ensure their quality of life as opposed to their quantity. He helps honest people make a fresh start of things. He always looks at all options and alternatives for his clients as to have filing the very last option since it does affect your credit. Bankruptcy may not be the scarlet letter it used to be, however you will need to rebuild your credit, and Justin helps his clients with that as well.

Justin did indeed give us a different perspective of bankruptcy and truly let us know that is it something that happens to real people. Good people, not just folks trying to get something for nothing. Justin takes his time to work with his clients to the best of his ability to help them understand all there is to know about the process, what is absolutely necessary and what is not.

Welcome to 2009!

Hello and welcome to 2009!

This year should prove to be a prosperous year for everyone. We have worked long and hard and it seems as though in the midst of a tough economy, we still manage to grow... Even if it is a silent growth, like the hibernation in winter before the spring...a form of growth is always possible...

Sometimes it is good to take time, a quieter time, a slower time to re-evaluate where we are, where we have been, and where we intend to go next.

Focus is important, and in slower times, we should embrace the extra time we have to do just that... breathe...

The group continues to grow and we have a great line-up for 2009! See member spotlight schedule. We have January until November filled and I will be more than happy to present in December... not to mention, if all goes according to plan, Be Well Kids will be open for business and available to host the group!! Yeah!! :O)

Kickoff Meeting a Success!

Well, we had our kick off meeting today and I feel it was, albeit noisy, very successful... There were 12 of us crowding the back right hand corner of Red Rose. There were lots of "Hi, how are you's" to "where are you located" to "maybe I need to give you a call's" All in all I feel everyone melded together nicely... the group has a unique dynamic that I feel will also draw other professionals in.

We passed around our "Member Spotlight" sign up sheet and Justin Dion from Bacon & Wilson was brave enough to go first! Adding to his bravery was his generosity of utilizing a room right there at Bacon & Wilson located at 33 State Street right there in downtown and I am sure the space will prove to be much more quiet, not to mention B&W will also be providing lunch. (Thank you)

Although that option may not be available for everyone, if your business can host our group, that would be great! Otherwise please send me options of where we can meet from 11:30-1 the second Friday of each month and get a private room without the charge. Although, I will have to let you know that before I left I did follow up with Solange, the dining room manager and let her know the spot may not be conducive to our needs, we really need the back room and she did offer to cut the price of the backroom in half, now making the fee $75 although, we still will not be able to get separate checks, so... send me ideas!

The way it worked out this morning wasn't too bad... 11:30 folks arrive - network, mingle, glance the menu - 11:45 I will go over any questions/answers from previous month and we can order lunch. 12 noon - go around the table giving our elevator speeches until say 12:15 that gives us two minutes each for our "60 second commercial"12:15 - 12:45 will give host speaker 30 minutes to offer up what they do and field a few questions from the group. 12:45-1 will be wind down - firm up next meeting location and final networking until we leave at 1pm.

As we get more members, our spotlight section will just get a little smaller, so... keep all your major points up front! And of course, we will be eating in there someplace :O)

I would also like you to think of who or what industry would be a good fit for your own business... That way there, any of us that may know someone in that particular business can mention the group, ultimately bringing you in new business.

I want to thank each one of you for coming today. I do feel this group will be a good mix... It all flowed this morning, again, relaxed yet focused...

New Networking Group

Hello and welcome to the Pioneer Valley Professionals networking group!

As much as I absolutely love the world wide web... there truly is no substitution for face to face conversation... call me old fashioned...

This group is designed for small and/or large businesses as well as folks who are self employed in the Pioneer Valley looking to grow their business and meet new people through a network offering professional referrals.

There are many networking groups out there, some cost to be a member, some meet at times that may not be convenient for everyone and some don't seem to accomplish much for what they charge. I would like this to be simple process at no additional charge to you other than the cost of your lunch you will be ordering. A relaxed yet focused group that folks enjoy coming to and that is beneficial to all its members. I want to invite business professionals that will help one another to expand our businesses together, truly a mutually beneficial relationship for all.

We will be sure to only have one person per skill set to maximize our potential for growth. I am sending out invitations, so, if you are interested, please be sure to contact me ASAP before your skill set is filled. We will meet for lunch the first Friday of every month, 11:30 to beat the rush to I would say no later than 1:00PM.

Also, feel free to invite anyone you think would be a good fit, and please realize not everyone will be a good fit. Have discernment. Let's remember, this is a business meeting. Just be sure to email or call me if you are planning on bringing a guest for I will need to be sure we have enough seating as well as be sure your guest does not conflict with an existing member.

During the meetings, we will have time to introduce ourselves and what we do as well as once a month I would like to be able to spotlight one member. There will be a sign up sheet at the first meeting for the PVP Spotlight schedule.
